The Great Hike

A painting for my mom, who hiked on the Milford track in New Zealand recently. This was a mother's day gift to her, because she loved the trip so much and I thought I'd give her a memory of it that she can hang. (Her photos weren't all that great haha)

I did reference a photograph for the environment since I've never been, located here: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/795526 The hiking gear is referenced from life, and my mother was from my head. I tried to use elements you'd find in NZ, the blue flowers, the Kea bird, and all the plants were researched in botanical and bird books she has and/or referenced from the photo directly.

The details are available here for closer inspection: http://mynti.deviantart.com/art/The-Great-Hike-Details-83988171

Wishes Can Start Small

Stats:
-Referenced This Stock: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/38005735/
-Looked at various photographs of tree bark to get an idea before I painted that part
-Rest was done from my head.

I created one brush for this project, for the tree bark, based on a splotchy watercolor painting I did in high school.
Rest was handpainted with a round hardedge brush, varying opacities and pixel sizes. Mostly 1px, 100%.

This is the full size of the painting - Fairy, mushroom, grass, flower, leaves, vines, the little mushroom monster, and most of the tree is painted as pixel art. This was originally created for a css template, with just the fairy, but after the template was finished, I figured I'd give the li'l gal a background.
